PRIDE OF SONGKHLA GUAN YU SHRINE Guan Yu: Guan Yu 关羽 The God of Loyalty, Great Guan Yu, is revered for his loyalty, virtue, and courage Architectural Lighting Design The designer studied the architectural style of Guan Yu Shrine and designed the lighting to reveal the beauty and unique characteristics of Hokkien Chinese architecture and art. Hokkien architecture, or Minnan architecture Hokkien architecture has some unique features, including: Swallowtail roof: The roof ridge curves upward like a swallow's tail, with varying degrees of curvature. The top of the ridge is elaborately decorated. Cut porcelain collage: Common in Hokkien architecture, this involves cutting or crushing porcelain pieces and attaching them to buildings for decoration. Artistic features can be found throughout the building's elements. Lighting installation at Guan Yu Shrine courtyard invites viewers to explore the roots of Chinese culture in Songkhla and the history of Guan Yu. It includes: • Feathers from the characters in Guan Yu's name (关: Guan: Barrier) (羽: Yu: Feather) • Artificial candles representing oil lamps lit to worship Guan Yu • Randomly displayed Chinese characters for viewers to assemble and discover a Chinese life motto connected to Songkhla's history Hokkien Chinese life motto: "Must fight to win" Traditional: 愛拼才會贏 Simplified: 爱拼才会赢 Pinyin: Ài pīn cái huì yíng Ai pin cai hui ying This motto instills in Hokkien descendants the eagerness to improve their lives.
