Mermaid Song.exe: A New World's Melodies Echoes of the Mermaid and Songkhla's Generations. Folk tales are more than just enchanting dreams; they are vessels carrying history and memory, vital conduits for transmitting culture and consciousness from one era to the next. In Songkhla, we have a "living tale" that can be touched and seen: the Golden Mermaid of Samila Beach, a sculpture that has sat serenely for over 59 years, nestled against the backdrop of Koh Nu and Koh Maew islands. This Golden Mermaid, nameless and with an unclear origin, has become an undeniable symbol. Everyone who visits Songkhla feels compelled to take a photo with her, or even touch her chest, completing a personal ritual of arrival. Over the past 59 years, her story has been richly woven through the imaginations of our people. From her ambiguous beginnings and her arrival in Songkhla during times of state-driven change, bombings, and even her "makeup" transformations, she has inadvertently become the city's enduring symbol. The mermaid embodies the blending of new identities, existing between land and water, animal and humankind, past and future. This ambiguity reflects both the hope and anxiety of a changing life, alongside the courage to move forward without abandoning one's roots. As a living, tangible narrative, she captivates us because her story is far from over. She continues to evolve with the times, representing a shared experience, a collective memory for all in this city. Mermaid Song.exe is an exhibition that decodes the "Mermaid's Voice" by exploring a "large data file" that unfolds into multiple dimensions: Under the concept of “Connectivity from the Past,” we interpret the "voices of people from each generation." Through interviews with Songkhla locals—from our esteemed Baby Boomers to the curious Gen Alpha children—we ask about the Golden Mermaid and Samila Beach in the context of gender, environment, and technology. This rich tapestry is interwoven with historical news images, experiences of natural disasters, and various unexpected events like the unexpected cosmetic alterations or the poignant cracks left after the bombing. All these elements form part of a single, continuous song file, constantly playing and narrating the story of the Samila Mermaid – encompassing her past, her present, and the "empty file" of her future. These stories will continue to run as long as there are people who care to listen. Mermaid Song.exe, an exhibition by Songkhla Pillar, invites you to embark on a reflective journey. It prompts you to reconsider and question the present moment, forging a connection with the mermaid of the past, thereby creating a space for you to envision the mermaid of the future. You are warmly invited to "open the file" and partake in the "ritual of photographing with the mermaid." Experience the deep emotions and profound connections of Songkhla's people, prompting questions about the mermaid's existence within the city's social, political, cultural, historical, and daily life contexts. This rich data from the people of Songkhla is transformed into compelling visuals, resonant sounds, intricate sculptures, and engaging workshops, all within the Mermaid Song.exe exhibition.
